Our outstanding research students, Jake Seah and Enrico Gigantino, entering the third year of studies in Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, showcased their research at the BioMedEng2024 international conference (5–6th September 2024, London) in form of poster presentations:

  • Jake Seah, Davide Carta, Daniel Hayer, Hossein Heidari, Julien Gautrot: "DLP Printing of Chips for Microvascularized Tissue Models".
  • Enrico Gigantino, Fiona Gibson, Stefaan Verbruggen: "Altered Biomechanics Analysis of Prostate Cancer Patients Using Phantom and Phantomless Densitometric Calibrations".

Jake's project focuses on developing 3D-printable, customizable organ-on-a-chip (OOC) microfluidics to reduce costs and improve accessibility. His membrane-less OOC model has been successfully verified, and the research is now in the cell seeding trial phase. This work aims to enhance research into human pathophysiology and personalized medicine, avoiding animal trials.

Enrico is investigating the increased risk of bone fractures in prostate cancer patients undergoing androgen deprivation therapy. His research centres on the failure analysis of lumbar vertebrae, using computational biomechanics techniques combined with CT scans. The goal of his study is to facilitate the early detection of structural damage and optimize preventive strategies to reduce fractures associated with cancer treatments.

Their participation to BioMedEng2024 marks a significant milestone in their academic journeys and provides a solid foundation for future research. Special thanks go to their supervisors, Prof. Julien Gautrot and Dr. Stefaan Verbruggen, as well as the other co-authors, for their invaluable contributions to these achievements.

These research activities are expected to continue and generate significant insights in their respective fields.
